Door to Nowhere

"Doors are a threshold. They open the way to a sanctuary and shut the bitterness of the world out, or they can be the beginning of an adventure. Doors are a threshold we trust—but what happens when we cross a threshold we shouldn’t? What if it leads To Nowhere? I don’t remember opening the door. I turned the handle and the hinge wouldn’t budge, it was deadlocked. I turned around to express my disappointment to my party when they were all gone. Everyone was gone. Understand, this door is underground in a subway. It used to lead to the lobby of the Knickerbocker hotel way back when, but now it’s just a wisp of a memory of a roarin’ age. There was no one. You wouldn’t think a quiet place to be eerie—the act of quiet is not what’s unnerving. It’s the sudden hush of what was once bustling. The sudden quelling of chatter and rushed steps. The sudden cease of steam from the subway and the lack of the clack-clack-clack of oncoming trains. It’s chilling. I walked around the surrounding station. I remember the feeling of raised hairs and small protrusions run down my arms. I remember the low ceilings and the old yellowing lights. I remember I couldn’t hear the sound of my composite boots hitting the tiled floor. Nowhere is a distorted word. Nowhere can only exist when there is a complete disconnect with anywhere. Anywhere only exists in question, unsure of its destination. Everywhere only exists in concept because nothing can BE everywhere, there is nothing infinite, space is finite and surely I will find its end as I walk hallway after hallway, platform after endless platform, crossing barren railways and getting lost in my thoughts. Nowhere is a distortion, as Nowhere is everywhere. I don’t know how long I walked along those walls. It could have been years or seconds, I couldn’t say. I found my way back to the door and with tears in my eyes whispered a silent prayer to cross the threshold once more. The violent rush of angry shouts and constant chatters was the voice of God. My party was confused at my incoherent muttering, which became concern as hot tears streaked down my face. Be weary of unknown thresholds. Before you open a door to nowhere, think if there is a destination behind it. Otherwise, you might end up lost in Nowhere."
